High School Concert Band
The Concert Band is open to all students who are interested in being a SCHS Band member. All grade levels are represented in this group, and there are no audition requirements. The Concert Band reads band literature on grade levels ranging from grade 2-4 and will attend a concert contest in the spring. The Concert Band also performs at the annual Christmas concert and spring concert.
High School Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is open to SCHS students that have a desire to further their music endeavors. There is an audition to be a part of this group, and members are expected to audition for All Region band as well as participate in the spring ASBOA Solo and Ensemble festival. In addition to the concert band class during the day, these students must commit to after school rehearsals twice a week as a member of the marching band in the fall and transitioning to symphonic band rehearsals after football season is over lasting the remainder of the year.
Field Color Guard
Color Guard is open to all students who have a desire and ability to twirl a flag, spin a rifle or sabre, and enjoy performing routines in front of large crowds. All grades are represented in Color Guard and clinics are held in early May to help prepare for the tryouts. Many performance opportunities exist in conjunction with the Marching Band and/or other ensembles.
Marching Band
The Star City Bulldog Regiment consists of all the above programs put into one large performing ensemble. The Regiment is an extra curricular group that is open to any band member that is willing to commit to the rehearsal and performance calendar We travel with the Bulldogs to every football game, as well as compete in 4-6 marching invitationals a year. This is a highly competitive ensemble that enjoys a long tradition of excellence, a high level of dedication is required, and expected of all members.
8th Grade Band
The Star City 8th grade band is the top performing ensemble at SCMS. We will play band literature ranging from grades 1-3 that will challenge them and help them to develop even stronger playing skills and musicality. We will perform for adjudication at the ASBOA Concert Assessment, as well as send many Solos and Ensembles to the annual festival. Eighth graders will audition for All-Region band and go to a contest in the spring.
7th Grade Band
The 7th grade band consists of students who have been in band for one year. Throughout the school year, the focus of the 7th grade band is to expand students’ musical knowledge and build upon the skills that they learned in sixth grade band. They will perform at solo/ensemble festival, as well as the annual Christmas concert and spring concert. Our 7th Graders are also eligible to audition for All-Region band.
6th Grade Band
Sixth grade band is for beginning band students who are learning how to play an instrument for the first time. The primary goal for this band is to develop the very beginning stages of knowledge of how to read music and how to play an instrument, and to give students a strong foundation on which the rest of their musical career will be built. Sixth grade band will perform at the Christmas and Spring Concerts, as well as our own Solo and Ensemble festival hosted during the school day.
